Produced by Gary Kemp.
Gary Kemp produced this album. It was his idea for me to record a torch song album with torch songs dating back from the 16th century ( The Silver Swan ) to the modern day. Gary put together an brilliantly unusual band (harp, tablas, cello, piano and saxophone) and we rehearsed in Gary’s immaculate Georgian living room and ate salads and vegetarian pasta.
WHERE I WANT TO BE
This song is written for a man but I always loved it! My friend Rebecca Caine (original Cossette in Les Miserables) sings soprano hauntingly on this wonderfully mad arrangement of my favourite song from Chess. I wonder what Benny, Bjorn and Tim think of it!
THE SKY ABOVE THE ROOF
Written by Vaughan Williams in 1908! We all wonder what we have done with our spent years. I love the cello played by Kate Shortt.
BEATEN UP IN LOVE AGAIN
One of my favourite dramatic contemporary ballads with great playing by harpist Hugh Webb and tablas by Pandit Danesh
BE ON YOUR OWN
From the musical Nine by one of my favourite song writers Maury Yeston
I was so lucky and honoured to have Barry Adamson do the string arrangement for this.
Stephen Sondheim. Alone is alone, not alive!
Stephen again! The naughty, flirty Miller’s Son… what a mouthful!
MOVING ON TIME
Written by my talented friend Helen Turner who is also the pianist on this album. Beautiful soprano sax played by Andrew McNeill
Written by Orlando Gibbons in the 16th century!
A VERY UNUSUAL WAY
By Maury Yeston. One of the most beautiful songs EVER!
SUMMER OF LOVE
By Paul Gordon…. Watch out for him! Daddy Long legs, Jane Ayre and more! Also… I was too young to remember the summer of love….but hey!
TAKE ME HOME
Tom Waits!!! Genius!
